Smart Tab Mute is a Chrome extension designed to enhance your browsing audio experience by ensuring that only one tab plays audio at any given time. If you have music playing in a background tab and start a video or audio in your current tab, Smart Tab Mute will automatically mute the background audio source, preventing overlapping sounds. Once playback in the active tab finishes, the extension unmutes the previously playing tab, maintaining seamless audio control.

Originally created for Chrome by @neuling2k, this extension has been adapted to provide compatibility with Firefox as well. It includes a whitelist feature that ensures important domains—such as slack.com and messenger.com—are never muted, preserving essential audio notifications. This smart audio management tool is perfect for users who multitask across many tabs and want to avoid audio clutter and confusion during web browsing.
