Simplify Firefox

Simplify

By: Alanas Add-on
Tired of cluttered articles? Hide ads and sidebars in one click. Read in light, sepia, or dark. Highlight any paragraph for a plain-English rewrite. Free, no account.

Features & Capabilities

Simplify does two things:

Reader Mode — strips clutter from articles and shows them in a clean, themeable view. Fully local.

AI Simplify Selection — sends selected text to our AI for plain-language rewriting. Off by default. First use shows a consent prompt; we store the "yes" flag locally so we don't ask again.

Test:

  1. Open https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars.
  2. Press Alt+Shift+S — reader mode opens. Try the theme switcher. Escape to exit.
  3. Select any paragraph, right-click → "Simplify Selection". Accept the prompt. The text comes back simpler. With the AI service offline, a local heuristic kicks in silently.

Permissions:

  • activeTab + scripting: inject the reader and selection UI.
  • contextMenus: the right-click action.
  • storage: themes + the AI consent flag.
  • host_permissions for our Railway endpoint: only hit after opt-in, only for the AI feature.

Vanilla JS. No bundler. No minification. The zip is the source.

Is Simplify Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Simplify requires very minimum permissions.

Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Add-ons Store, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

Simplify is recently added, and hasn't been around long enough for us to gather enough data to accurately assess its risk level.
