Simple Discard Tab Firefox

Simple Discard Tab

By: em_te
Discards tabs that are inactive for 3 minutes to free up memory, while still preserving the tabs state when you click on them again. No privileged permissions required.

Features & Capabilities

Simple Discard Tab is a lightweight Chrome extension designed to optimize your browser's memory usage by discarding tabs that have been inactive for 3 minutes or more. Utilizing the browser’s native 'discard' function, it safely hibernates tabs to stop background processes and conserve resources while preserving the tab's history and scroll position when reopened. Unlike other tab suspension tools, Simple Discard Tab requires no privileged permissions, eliminating privacy concerns and preventing potential spying, making it a secure choice for users.

Configurable for your convenience, the extension checks your tabs every minute to determine inactivity. Additionally, enabling the optional "read browser tabs" permission lets you whitelist specific domains to keep their tabs active. Ideal for enhancing browser performance and reducing memory usage seamlessly, Simple Discard Tab offers an efficient, secure, and easy-to-use solution for managing inactive tabs.

While I like the app, I find it very annoying that it basically wipes clean any input you make on forms or submissions if you jump between tabs. Say you're filling in a long form an you are asked to add information you don't know by heart and you switch tabs to search for it - all input you've added up to that point gets wiped clean and you have to start all over again. It should allow you to set your own timeframe to when it clears memory.

Perfect - just what I wanted: Automatically discard open tabs after some (adjustable) amount of time. Background: I'm a "use multiple instances of Firefox distributed over my many virtual desktops, each one with quite a few tabs, e.g. 10 to 20". Without this tool I get memory readings easily well above 10's of GB - which is kind of "problematic" :-) Clicking on a discarded tab later on, more or less, instantly recovers it (as long as the date inside Firefox's cache was still valid - as far as I understand it) - which is perfectly fine! I prefer waiting "a second" compared to - Firefox is eating up my RAM. What I wonder most is, why Firefox itself hasn't inbuilt this feature now (mid of 2025)... PS: Ever wondered what Firefox is doing right now / which tab uses what amount of memory? Check out Firefox's "about:performance" and "about:unloads" pages. The first one shows you how much memory/cpu your tabs (and a few other things) are currently using. And about:unloads gives you a list of all active tabs (so already discarded ones don't show up there) - and especially: When did you last view them and how much RAM do they use. about:performance updates automatically, about:unload, you have to reload it manually to get an updated view... PPS. If you are going to check if the add-on works correctly, give it enough time. E.g. if you have the initial discard timer set to 3 minutes and the last accessed time would be 9:00:03, then the tab will not be discarded at 9:03:03. The add-on runs only every full minute (as I've understood it), so at 9:04:00 the Add-on checks, that the page hasn't be used for more than 3 minutes and discards it...
