Limit Tabs

Limits tabs to maintain system responsiveness.

Limit Tabs is a powerful Chrome extension designed to help users maintain optimal browser performance by automatically managing open tabs. It limits the number of tabs by closing one whenever new tabs exceed a set limit, ensuring your system remains responsive.

Key features include options to remove the newest tab, the least recently used tab, or tabs on either end of the tab bar. Pinned tabs are protected from closure. Users can set tab limits per window or apply a global limit across all windows. The extension is user-friendly with toggle functionality via the toolbar icon and customizable preferences to tailor the tab management according to individual needs. Originally developed to aid with managing excessive tabs for an autistic user, it now benefits anyone looking to reduce browser clutter and improve system responsiveness.

User reviews

"Limit Tabs" is praised for effectively controlling tab overload and improving browser speed, especially beneficial for users with ADHD or autism. Its simple design and customization options are appreciated. However, multiple users mention confusing settings language, absence of any lock to prevent limit changes, lack of sound volume control, and inconsistent handling of pinned tabs. There is also a noted workaround around per-window limits. Overall, it is a well-liked tool that aids users in managing tab chaos despite some usability and feature limitations.
Pros
  • Effectively limits the number of open tabs, helping users manage tab hoarding and improve browser responsiveness.
  • Helps users with attention difficulties, such as autism or ADHD, keep better control over their browsing.
  • Simple and thoughtful design that performs its intended function well.
  • Offers customization options for tab limit enforcement across windows and tab removal strategies.
  • Positive impact on system performance by preventing excessive tabs from slowing down the computer.
Cons
  • Settings language can be confusing, particularly about how the maximum tab number is interpreted and phrasing of options.
  • No ability to lock or password-protect the tab limit, allowing users to change or disable the limit at any time.
  • Lack of volume control for the alert sound, which can be too loud or annoying for some users.
  • The add-on sometimes does not count pinned tabs toward the limit, leading to inconsistent behavior.
  • Potential workaround to bypass per-window limits by opening new windows and dragging tabs between them.

Can please make it so I can only open 1 tab? Edit: I'm going hardcore on this "1 tab" thing, I'm trying to use my pc only for watching classes and when I have two tabs I have the option to open social media on the second one, please. This is one of my favourite tabs, and the option to make turning off more difficult (like timeblocks or a waiting time to turn off)

Extension safety

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Limit Tabs does not require any sensitive permissions.
