Features & Capabilities

Redact is a small Firefox extension that redacts text on a page so you can screenshot it without having to edit the image afterwards.

To use it, just highlight some text and choose "Redact" from the right-click menu. To get rid of the redactions, reload the page.

That's all there is to it! Redact stays out of your way.

By default, the text is actually removed from the page (and replaced with "[REDACTED]" inside the blackout boxes), so saving the webpage, printing to PDF, etc. is also safe. If you want to make sure the layout doesn't change, you can change the redaction method to simply set the background color to the foreground color instead. (The settings are in the Preferences tab on the extension details, in about:addons.)

If you're printing, you may have to turn on Print Backgrounds in order to see the blackout boxes.

User Reviews

Works as advertised, and easy to understand. Two pieces of feedback: It would be great if you could "redact all" for when there are many instances of the same string. Also it really breaks the page when you try to redact on multiple cells in a table.

Is Redact Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Redact does not require any sensitive permissions.

Risk impact analysis details
Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Add-ons Store, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

Redact has earned a fairly good reputation and likely can be trusted.
