Review summary

QuickCut is a handy, cross‑platform tool that creates native shortcut files for web pages via a context menu, making it easy to save and organize links. It’s loved as essential by many users and works across browsers and OSes. However, it has notable issues: it stopped working with Firefox 112+ for some users and can inconsistently save as HTML instead of .url/.desktop shortcuts. There are also common requests for more integrated features like a keyboard shortcut and replacement of the browser's bookmark button.
Pros
  • Easy one-click saving of web links via the context menu, often with a keyboard shortcut, creating a shortcut quickly.
  • Saves web links as native shortcut files (.url on Windows, .desktop on Linux) rather than HTML bookmarks, making them portable and easy to organize next to related files.
  • Cross-platform compatibility and broad browser support (works in Waterfox, Firefox, Eclipse Browser, LibreWolf) and is valued on Linux distros like Ubuntu GNOME.
  • Widely regarded as essential/handy for managing shortcuts, with years of usefulness and positive impressions.
Cons
  • Major compatibility issue: after Firefox 112 update, QuickCut stops working for many users.
  • Inconsistent file generation: in some cases saves as HTML files instead of native shortcuts (.url/.desktop), breaking expected behavior.
  • User-requested enhancements (e.g., add a direct keyboard shortcut, or replace the browser's star/bookmark button) indicate room for integration improvements.

2025-04-16 Na***** Finally!!! Before, with Linux Mint, I had problems creating Link shortcuts on the desktop (or other folders): I had to keep a Nemo window (Mint Cinnamon's file manager) in the foreground and drag the link to it. Now I just have to click once. Thank you so much for this wonderful plugin, great job! Just one thing: with the dark theme the icon is very difficult to see. Is there any way to change it? Best regards and thanks again.
