User reviews
Pros
- Enables offline viewing and rendering of .ipynb files directly in Firefox without needing Jupyter Notebook server.
- Works fairly well for most notebooks, with good support for math rendering via KaTeX.
- Simple and convenient tool that saves time opening Python Notebook files without dedicated applications.
- Generally appreciated for the ease it brings to viewing notebooks and as a helpful utility overall.
Cons
- The extension appears abandoned with last update in 2019, leading to bugs and outdated support.
- Text rendering issues occur, especially with dark mode themes causing white text on light backgrounds that is hard to read.
- Some notebooks do not render properly and some math symbols may not display correctly.
- Slow loading times for some files and occasional requirement to refresh the page for proper rendering.
- Does not work reliably on some newer Firefox versions and operating systems, sometimes just rendering JSON instead of formatted notebooks.

Still works fine with Firefox on Windows 11, as of 2025-02-10. The trick is to refresh the page for one more time :) Enjoy!

This addon opens local .ipynb files and renders them completely offline. To do this, it builds on existing open-source components like an iPython notebook parser (notebook.js, https://github.com/jsvine/notebookjs) and math rendering engine (katex.js, https://github.com/KaTeX/KaTeX). There are sometimes rendering differences for unusual notebooks but in general this works very well.

Extension safety
Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk
impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of
damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your
personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they
do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.
Python Notebook Viewer requires very minimum permissions.

- High Injects scripts into web pages, which may alter or extract site contents, resulting in a substantial risk.
Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious.
This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on
Firefox Browser Add-ons, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been
around, and other signals about the
Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change
as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always
