Insect Identifier: Bug ID

By: Milad Atef App
Identify bugs, insects and spiders by photo: risk level, species, look-alikes.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Insect Identifier is a field guide for insects, spiders and other arthropods, and every result opens with the species' risk level. Photograph the bug on the wall and get a likely match.

WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU
- The common name, and a second name where there is one
- The species' risk level, which the result leads with
- The Latin scientific name, or the genus if a photo stops short
- Group, order and family: insect, arachnid or myriapod
- Habitat, range and body length in mm and inches
- Whether it can sting or bite, and how it behaves
- Look-alikes, their risk levels, and what separates them
- Diet, metamorphosis, ecological role, confidence level

EVERY RESULT OPENS WITH THE RISK LEVEL
The risk level leads every result: it is what people want first. It is a short label from a fixed set: Harmless, Stinging, Biting, Allergenic, Venomous, Disease vector, Unknown, and Not applicable when the photo is not an arthropod. It belongs to the species, not to the one in your photo: Harmless describes what a species is generally capable of. It is a description, never a score or a scale, never an instruction about what to pick up.

INSECTS, SPIDERS, CENTIPEDES AND WOODLICE
Point the camera at an arthropod, or pick a photo you have. Spiders are arachnids, not insects, and the result names the group first. Bees, wasps, hornets and the hoverflies that mimic them, ants, beetles, ladybugs, moths, butterflies, caterpillars, jumping and wolf spiders, ticks and scorpions. Centipedes and millipedes are myriapods, woodlice are crustaceans. Cockroaches, termites, bed bugs, pantry moths, aphids and garden larvae. Anything that is not an arthropod returns low confidence.

BUILT FOR THE PHOTOS YOU ACTUALLY TAKE
At an angle, with half the legs already out of frame. Leg count, body segments, antennae, wing pattern and mouth parts feed the match, and every result names the look-alikes: a hoverfly against a honey bee, a house spider against a wolf spider. With small flies, beetles and ants a photo often cannot reach a species, and this bug identifier stops at the genus.

ASK ABOUT THE ARTHROPOD YOU JUST IDENTIFIED
Every scan opens a chat thread on the species you just identified: look-alike separations, insect against arachnid, what it does in a garden. It stays on arthropods.

YOUR COLLECTION, KEPT
Every scan is saved on your device with its photo, so a summer of garden finds becomes a list. No account.

WHO IT IS FOR
- Anyone with a bug on the wall, in the sink or the pantry
- Spider watchers who want the group, species and look-alikes
- Gardeners weighing a pollinator, a predator or a pest
- Naturalists, macro photographers, entomology enthusiasts
- Parents, teachers and kids on a bug hunt

HONEST ABOUT WHAT A PHOTO CAN DO
An identification here is a best-effort AI suggestion, not an authoritative determination. Small insects and spiders need a microscope for a species call, and this bug identifier says so rather than guessing.

Insect Identifier gives no medical, allergy or pest-control treatment advice. For a severe reaction to a sting or bite, especially difficulty breathing or rapid swelling, contact emergency services. It names species and tells you about them, and that is all: no treatment plan, no product, no home assessment. The risk level and the look-alikes are background about a species, never a clearance for the one in front of you.

Identification needs an internet connection. Scans you have already saved stay on your device and can be reopened at any time.

The app interface and the results are available in 33 languages.

PREMIUM
Free includes 2 identifications per day. Premium removes the daily limit and opens the full detail sheet on every result. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends, and you can manage or cancel yours in your Google Play account settings at any time.
