Chicken Identifier: Breed ID

By: Milad Atef App
Scan any hen or rooster: breed, eggs per year, temperament and coop needs.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Chicken Identifier turns your phone into a pocket poultry expert. Point the camera at any chicken and get a straight answer in seconds: the breed, how many eggs a hen of that breed lays in a year, and whether she suits your backyard.

WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU
- The chicken breed, its class and country of origin
- Egg production: how many eggs per year, and what colour they are
- Temperament: docile, flighty, noisy, or a determined forager
- Cold hardiness and heat hardiness, and how broody she is likely to go
- Adult weight, coop and run space, and whether she fits a small garden
- Whether the bird is a hen or a rooster, when the photo shows it

BUILT FOR REAL BACKYARD CHICKENS, NOT SHOW BIRDS
Muddy hens, half-grown pullets, barnyard crosses and commercial hybrid layers all work. Most backyard chickens are not textbook examples of anything, and this chicken breed identifier is built around that. When a photo is not good enough to be certain, it says so instead of guessing a breed.

HOW MANY EGGS WILL SHE LAY?
That is the question behind almost every scan, so it leads every result. A Leghorn and an Orpington are both good hens and they are not remotely the same bird: one gives you well over 280 white eggs a year, the other around 200 brown ones and goes broody every spring. You see the egg count before anything else.

BREEDS THE APP KNOWS
Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, Leghorn, Orpington, Australorp, Wyandotte, Sussex, Brahma, Marans, Silkie, Cochin, Polish, Ameraucana, Easter Egger, New Hampshire Red, Jersey Giant, Bantam varieties, and the commercial sex-link hybrids sold as ISA Brown, Red Star, Golden Comet and Lohmann Brown.

TELL THE LOOKALIKES APART
Australorp or black Orpington. Ameraucana or Easter Egger. Buff Orpington or Buff Rock. Each result points at the field marks that actually separate them: comb type, earlobe colour, shank colour, leg feathering, and the number of toes.

THE TRAITS THAT DECIDE WHETHER SHE FITS
Two hens that look almost identical can be wrong and right for the same garden. Noise level matters if you have neighbours. Comb size matters if your winters are hard. Broodiness matters if you want eggs rather than chicks.

ASK A POULTRY EXPERT
Every scan opens a chat thread with an AI that stays on chicken keeping. Ask which breeds lay through a cold winter, how much run space eight hens need, when to switch from grower to layer feed, how to predator-proof a coop, or why your new pullet has not started laying yet.

YOUR FLOCK, KEPT
Every scan is saved automatically with its photo, so the birds in the run turn into a flock record you can search. Nothing to type in, nothing to file.

WHO IT IS FOR
- New chicken keepers who brought chicks home from the feed store
- Anyone choosing what to add to the flock and comparing egg output
- Owners of a hatchery rainbow mix working out which bird is which
- Homesteaders and smallholders who want a fast second opinion

HONEST ABOUT WHAT A PHOTO CAN DO
Breed identification from a photograph is an estimate. Commercial hybrids and barnyard crosses genuinely look like pure breeds, and egg figures are breed-typical ranges rather than a promise about your individual bird: age, feed, daylight and moult all move the real number. Sexing a chick under about six weeks is not reliable from a picture, and nothing here is veterinary advice. For a sick bird, call a poultry vet or your extension service.

Identification needs an internet connection.
