Preferer Firefox

Preferer

Block reddit pages unless coming from a search engine, to avoid wasting time.

Features & Capabilities

This addon SILENTLY blocks all requests that are not coming from another website (i.e. a search engine), to discourage clicking through on reddit. Loading messages is not blocked, to avoid users disabling the addon when they have the urge to check them.

This makes endlessly scrolling on reddit impossible, while still allowing the site to be used when finding it in the results of search engines, where the chances are higher you were searching for important info, as opposed to mindlessly scrolling.

User Reviews

Best extension ever! Exactly what I was looking for!
by Vu*****, 2022-06-16

The extension claims to only block Reddit, but it also blocks the following sites: tweakers.net tweakers.nl hckrnews.com ycombinator.com imgur.com xkcd.com youtube.com smbc-comics.com oglaf.com There is no way to change this without editing the source. There is also no indication that this extension broke these sites - they just show a blank screen when you try to use them. Seem to work OK apart from that, but you need to be able and willing to edit the source code manually.

Is Preferer Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Preferer requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.
