Popupblocker Firefox

Popupblocker

Popupblocker can block every popup. Many websites open new windows with ads, when you try to mark text or click something. This add-on will block these and show a really small notification.

Features & Capabilities

Popupblocker is a powerful Chrome extension designed to prevent unwanted popups and new tabs that interrupt your browsing experience. It features a unique "Smart" mode that limits websites to opening only one tab at a time, reducing distractions from excessive windows. Users can customize settings with separate blacklists and whitelists, allowing control over which sites can open windows or tabs. Popupblocker operates discreetly by letting popups open briefly before blocking them, making it undetectable as a popup blocker on most websites.

Key features include blocking all new windows or tabs, configuring permissions per site, and a small notification system to inform you when popups are blocked. This add-on enhances your Chrome browsing by keeping your screen free from intrusive ads and popup clutter, giving you a cleaner and more focused web experience.

User Reviews

Popupblocker generally shines at blocking new-tab popups and is praised for its simplicity and a useful block-all-then-whitelist workflow, especially on streaming sites. However, users report inconsistent behavior across modes (blocks intended tabs or misses JS-initiated tabs), interference with legitimate actions (options, private windows, shortcuts), and occasional conflicts with other extensions or UI quirks. There’s a clear desire for easier wildcard support and override options to improve usability and reduce false positives across diverse sites.
Pros
  • Effectively blocks new-tab popups and unwanted windows, reducing interruptions
  • Simple, lightweight and easy to use
  • Supports a block-all-then-whitelist workflow for customization
  • Helpful for streaming sites to prevent repetitive ads and popups
Cons
  • Inconsistent behavior across modes (block all vs smart), sometimes blocking tabs you intend to open or failing to block JavaScript-initiated tabs
  • Can block legitimate actions (opening the add-on options, private windows) and disrupt keyboard shortcuts
  • Can clash with other extensions (e.g., Undo Closed Tab) and cause UI annoyances (e.g., jumping to the last tab, no page shown)
  • Requests for easier wildcard/domain management (e.g., wildcards for subdomains) to simplify blocklist maintenance
  • Some sites may still experience audio/video playback issues or other edge-case blockings

A total fail. It blocks new tabs if you intentionally try to open them (always in "block all" mode, and randomly in "smart" mode). It does not block tabs opened by JavaScript. So this add-on is doing the opposite of what it is supposed to do.

High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.
