| 2015-06-15 |  | | en | Learn to read by memorizing words? THIS IS WHY 50% OF ADULTS IN THE US ARE ILLITERATE! There are almost 500,000 words in English..you can't memorize them all! I taught my 3 1/2 yr old g'daughter to READ & spell all 3 & 4 letter words as well as some longer ones line monkey & goose. She learned by PHONICS. First she sang the alphabet, then she sang the phonemes ('a' says 'Ay or 'a', B says 'Buh', etc. ). Then she sounded out the words. Now she can read beginner books WITHOUT help! I tutor many adults who failed to graduate because they never learned to read, they learned to MEMORIZE & any word someone didn't say 'learn' they couldn't figure out. As they went through our appalling public school system they fell farther & farther behind. Once 'mandatory testing' came about they gave up. Others faked it through to 12th grade, but getting a decent job was impossible because they couldn't fill out a job app. (I was a CNO of 2 medical facilities) Learning by rote limits what & where one goes; learning HOW gives one the world through books |
