The UMIEMY.TO application is an innovative solution that provides teachers with tools to conduct media education classes in an interesting and engaging way. By using the mechanism of interacting with the content displayed on the slides in live mode via students' smartphones and other devices, classes become much more varied and exciting. The educational content was prepared by experts and available to every teacher divided into the following modules:
• disinformation
• fake news
• manipulations
• hate speech
• information bubble
• the impact of modern technologies on humans
• artificial intelligence (AI)
Thanks to unconventionally developed and professionally visualized educational content, students are able to understand the mechanisms of the above issues and counteract their negative effects, among others, by recognizing and verifying content found on the Internet. Learning critical thinking is currently the most important challenge for young people in a dynamically changing world.
The above list of modules is not exhaustive. The application is constantly developing and is open to new educational content developed by experts. The nearest plans are: civic education, hygiene and digital well-being, civic participation, cooperation vs. competition. In the long run, the application has no limitations and can be used both to learn standard subjects (biology, geography, chemistry, etc.) as well as completely new topics that will prove crucial from an educational perspective in the coming years.
The application works mainly in schools (primary, secondary), but it can also be used for other target groups (students, informal groups, etc.).
We have three different difficulty levels of educational content for the following age groups (both slides and tests):
- 10-13 years old
- 14-17 years old
- 18+
The teacher has the following options in the application:
1. Adding the school and class where you want to display educational content
2. Displaying educational content during classes in any selected module
3. Conducting tests to check students' knowledge
4. Recording the results and progress of individual classes
In the case of committed teachers who conduct an appropriate number of classes with students, it will be possible for them to obtain PRO status - which allows them to add their own educational content in the form of creating lessons within existing modules.
In the application, the student has the opportunity to:
1. Participate in classes led by the teacher and interact with the displayed content in live mode via your own device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.)
2. Participate in tests conducted by the teacher and provide answers in live mode via your own device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.)
3. View all your results, progress, activities
4. Participating in rankings based on gamification
5. Participating in competitions with prizes (which will be described in a separate mode in the application)
In the future (after completing development work on the application), students 18+ will be able to display educational content on their own device and take part in tests (similarly to the Duolingo application).
The application does not collect any personal data of persons under 18 years of age! Therefore, parental consent should not be required for its use by underage students.
The application was created by the Instytut Diskursu i Dialogu (INDID) foundation with programming and graphic support from AppWorks Software House. The application will be available for free to all users until at least the end of 2025. Its creation and operation were possible thanks to a grant awarded under the Digital Equity Accelerator 2024 program by HP and the HP Foundation.
