PDF Dark Mode Reader Firefox

PDF Dark Mode Reader

Read PDFs in dark mode with multiple themes. Reduce eye strain and read comfortably. 100% local processing — your files never leave your device.

Features & Capabilities

PDF Dark Mode Reader is a polished, lightning-fast extension designed to bring true dark mode to your PDF documents. Whether you're a student pulling an all-nighter, a researcher reading endless papers, or just someone who hates blinding white screens, this extension makes reading incredibly comfortable.

Unlike basic color inverters that destroy the look of your documents, PDF Dark Mode Reader features a custom Smart Engine with multiple carefully crafted themes (Warm Dark, Blue Dark, Green Dark, Sepia, and High Contrast). It intelligently maps harsh white backgrounds to soothing tones while perfectly preserving the exact colors of your text, images, and links. Blue hyperlinks stay blue, and red warning text stays red!

✨ Key Features:

  • Smart Color Preservation: Inverts lightness while retaining exact hues. Say goodbye to washed-out, monochrome documents.
  • Crystal-Clear HD Rendering: Our upgraded engine fully supports Retina and high-DPI displays. PDFs and sidebar thumbnails render flawlessly in sharp high-definition without any memory bloat.
  • Smart Bookmarks & State Saving: Press Ctrl+D to bookmark any page. The extension automatically remembers your exact reading position, zoom level, current theme, and bookmarks for every individual PDF you open!
  • Focus Mode & Text-to-Speech: Dim all toolbars with a single click (F) to immerse yourself in the document, or use the integrated read-aloud TTS feature (T) for multitasking and accessibility.
  • Lightning Fast Search: A fully custom, native text-search engine. Instantly find exactly what you're looking for—matching text is highlighted brightly in orange and yellow right on the dark canvas, and automatically scrolled into view.
  • Scholar-Style Interface: A clean, minimalistic top-toolbar inspired by modern academic readers. Keep your workspace distraction-free.
  • Interactive Sidebar: Quickly navigate through massive textbooks using the collapsible page-thumbnail sidebar, or jump instantly between chapters using the automatically extracted Table of Contents (Outline).
  • Smooth Lazy-Loading: Designed for extreme performance. Even 1,000+ page textbooks open instantly and scroll smoothly without jitter or jumping.
🔒 Privacy First We believe your documents are your business. This extension operates 100% locally on your machine. Your PDFs are never uploaded, parsed, or sent to any external servers. Zero telemetry, zero accounts, zero cloud syncing, zero data collection.

PDF Dark Mode Reader v3.0.0 — Major Update

We are excited to announce version 3.0.0 of PDF Dark Mode Reader! This major release transforms the extension into a fully-featured, premium PDF reading experience while retaining our strict 100% offline, privacy-first architecture.

✨ New Features

1. HD Rendering Engine

  • Retina/High-DPI Support: The underlying PDF rendering engine now respects your monitor's pixel density. PDFs and sidebar thumbnails render in crystal-clear HD on high-resolution displays.
  • Zero Memory Bloat: A rewritten rendering pipeline completely eliminates memory leaks by explicitly cleaning up internal font/image caches when pages are scrolled out of view.

2. Smart Bookmarks & Table of Contents

  • Bookmark Current Page (Ctrl+D): Save your exact spot in any document with a single click.
  • Persistent State: The extension uses a SHA-256 hash of the PDF to remember your bookmarks, zoom level, current page, and theme preference for every individual document you read across sessions.
  • Interactive Outline: If your PDF contains a built-in Table of Contents, it is automatically extracted and displayed in the sidebar for one-click navigation.

3. Productivity & Focus Tools

  • Focus Mode (F): Dim all UI elements and toolbars with a single click to immerse yourself entirely in the document.
  • Read Aloud / Text-to-Speech (T): An integrated TTS engine reads the text on the page out loud, perfect for accessibility or multitasking.
  • Reading Progress Bar: A sleek progress bar at the top of the screen visually tracks how far along you are in the document.

4. Premium Aesthetic Upgrades

  • New Iconography: A brand new transparent moon logo that looks stunning in the browser toolbar.
  • Refined Toolbar: The navigation toolbar has been rewritten using flexible layouts, preventing overlapping buttons and providing a modern, glassmorphic feel.
  • Upgraded UI Assets: Replaced legacy monochrome icons with modern, gradient-infused SVG assets.

🛠 Core Features (Always Included)

  • Multi-Theme Support: Choose from Classic Dark, Warm Dark (Claude), Blue Dark, Green Dark, Sepia, or High Contrast.
  • 100% Local Processing: No accounts, no cloud sync, no tracking. Your files never leave your device.
  • Native Keyboard Shortcuts: Full support for keyboard navigation (arrows, J/K scrolling, zoom shortcuts).
  • Cross-Browser Manifest: Fully compatible with both Chrome (Manifest V3 Service Workers) and Firefox.

User Reviews

So it's nice in theory. It does in fact make the pdfs significantly nicer to read. There isn't functionality for the table of contents or bookmarks like there is in the default firefox pdf view though which is a bummer. Maybe that's okay for you, but I don't want to have to scroll manually to find my chapters or have to remember the page number in the pdf and the offset that appears when firefox can't read the page numbers or whatever it does
