User reviews

Passbolt is praised for being an open-source, user-friendly password manager ideal for team collaboration, with strong data ownership and secure password sharing. However, multiple users report that the Firefox extension can severely slow down the browser, disrupt websites like YouTube, and lacks flexibility such as disabling on certain sites or accessing passwords without installing the addon. Additionally, there are usability concerns like repeated passphrase prompts and missing security features like YubiKey support.
Pros
  • Truly open source, giving users full ownership of their data.
  • Good user experience and easy to use.
  • Works flawlessly on private servers for team password management.
  • Highly regarded as a reliable and secure team password manager.
  • Supports secure password sharing within teams.
Cons
  • Extension causes Firefox to slow down significantly, affecting other tasks like playing music on YouTube.
  • The addon breaks functionality on certain websites such as YouTube, requiring users to disable it temporarily.
  • Users are forced to install the extension to access passwords, without an option to just browse the web version.
  • The extension does not remember the "remember until I logout" setting, causing repeated passphrase entry.
  • Lack of advanced security integrations like YubiKey for easier authentication.

I've installed it because it's mandatory to use the passbolt data (even if I need to use it only from the web page) and now that is installed as a plugin, my firefox has begun to slow down so much that it's impossible to ear music in youtube and many other actions are also slowed down. I have to disable the passbolt each time I start firefox to be able to use correctly the browser and if I remove the plugin (as I've already done) I can't access anymore the web site that contains the passwords. So I highly discourage this tool if you are not forced to use it by some reason, use keepass2 instead as I do !
