Features & Capabilities

Palette Vault is a color toolkit that lives in your sidebar. Generate a palette, pull one out of a photo, and keep the ones you like. It stays open beside the page instead of closing the moment you click away.

Everything runs on your own machine. No account, no sign-up, no analytics, and no network requests of any kind.

GENERATE A PALETTE Four colors that belong together, in one click. Keep rerolling until something lands, or pick a mood to steer it.

Palettes are built in OKLCH, a color space designed so that equal steps in lightness look equal to the eye. That is not true of the older ways of describing color: in HSL a yellow and a blue can claim the same lightness while the yellow glares and the blue reads as nearly black. Working in a space that matches perception is why four colors here read as a set rather than as four unrelated values.

PULL COLORS OUT OF AN IMAGE

Drop a photo into the panel, or paste one from your clipboard, and get the colors that actually define it.

The colors are clustered by how they look rather than sampled on a grid. Sampling returns whatever happened to sit under the sampling points, which on a photo is usually four shades of the same background. Clustering finds the colors that carry the image, including the accent that covers very little of it.

You can also right-click any image on any page and choose "Extract palette from this image" without opening the panel at all.

KEEP WHAT YOU LIKE

Save any palette to a local collection and come back to it later. It lives in your browser, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to sync.

Click any swatch to copy its hex code, or take a whole palette as a hex list, an rgb list, CSS custom properties, or a JSON array.

WHAT IT ASKS FOR, AND WHY

The permission list is deliberately short.

  • storage: keeps your saved palettes and preferences on your own machine
  • activeTab: access to the tab you are on, only at the moment you invoke the extension
  • scripting: reads the pixels of an image you right-clicked, inside that page
  • contextMenus: adds the one right-click entry for images
There is no host permission. The extension cannot see the sites you visit and has no standing access to any page.

FREE, WITH NO CATCH

No paid tier, no trial, no attribution required. Colors cannot be owned, and anything you make here is yours to use, commercially or otherwise.

Palette Vault is also a website, with a large catalog of ready-made palettes, a page for every named color, and more tools: https://palettevault.github.io
