User Reviews

Users appreciate the WBUR app for offering access to live streams and podcasts with good sound quality and an attractive interface without charge. However, recurring issues negatively impact experience: the app often crashes or won't start, struggles with unstable streaming, and unexpectedly stops playback. Many users report inability to run the app properly in the background, with it frequently cutting out or refusing to terminate, leading to excessive battery use. Downloaded podcasts sometimes fail to play. These technical problems make the app frustrating despite its useful features.

Pros

Provides access to WBUR live streams and podcasts
Good sound quality
Attractive and pleasant user interface
Allows downloading entire shows for offline listening
Free to use without direct payment

Cons

App frequently crashes or fails to start
Streaming is unstable, often drops or stops unexpectedly
App does not play properly in background or cuts out when switching apps
Cannot properly terminate app; it runs persistently in background consuming battery
Downloaded podcasts sometimes don't play after download

Recent reviews

Playback stops unpredictably, not a wifi or 5g issue. I don't have the same problem on iOS. (2024) It's 2025 and this problem persists. Same in 2026 - It's a big shame the app is unusable for streaming on Android because of this problem. While I appreciate the WBUR reply to this review, I don't want to talk to troubleshooting, I'd like the app to "just work" like it does on iOS. Look at all the other reviews reporting this problem... Devs should pull logs and actually fix this.

This app used to work beautifully for me. It's the only NPR station app I can find where I can download the entire show (morning Edition/ ATC) and then play it back in full. As of December or January 2025- the app will time out if the WBUR screen is not up. In other words, if I switch to another app while listening to my download, the app cuts out. It basically makes it unusable. I was loving it so much. Listening on a pixel phone. I hope they can address these concerns.
