Review summary

Users praise Vermont Public app for its excellent VPR content, especially classical music and news, and better experience than other public radio apps. However, many report significant issues including frequent crashes, poor handling of network changes leading to lost signals and interruptions, intrusive ads, playback problems, and unresponsive controls. Despite these, the app is valued for bringing Vermont's programming to listeners anywhere and its calming music selection.
Pros
  • Excellent programming and content quality, especially for classical music and news.
  • Provides access to Vermont Public Radio (VPR) from anywhere, including out of state.
  • Better user experience compared to other public radio apps like NPR, WGBH, and WBUR.
  • Variety of on-demand programs and features available.
  • Hosts and music selection are pleasant and calming.
Cons
  • App frequently crashes or shuts down randomly during use.
  • Connectivity handling is poor, with the app losing signal when switching between Wi-Fi and cellular or in dead zones.
  • Audio playback issues such as stuttering, failure to recover after signal loss, and not saving playback position in on-demand shows.
  • Intrusive and frequent advertisements, especially on reconnecting, which interrupt listening experience.
  • Unresponsive interface, slow reactions to user input, and usability issues like difficult navigation in program listings.

This app used to be great, but recently it began to spontaneously shut down approximately every 15 minutes or so.

A couple rough edges but leaps and bounds beyond the NPR app, the WGBH app and the WBUR app

The programming is good, but I have difficulty when I'm connected to Wi-Fi, leave the Wi-Fi area and reconnect to cellular and visa versa. Every time this occurs, I lose the signal and then when the signal resumes I have an ad for 30 seconds or so. This makes the app unusable outside as I have both a weak Wi-Fi signal and a marginal cellular signal. This could be fixed if the app only played ads on the initial connection to the device and not on reconnections. BTW I'm a sustaining member.

The app is pretty good but when I'm listening to music in my car and I drive through a dead cell signal zone, as is frequent in Vermont, when I emerge from it the app is still spinning its wheel and does not recover. I do NOT have this problem with several other public radio apps, which recover smartly when the signal returns. Another issue, which may be the station or may be the app, is that, unlike other apps, it doesn't show what music I'm listening to. I have to look it up in the playlist.

I spent many years enjoying VPR/NPR while living in VT. Public Radio has always been to a staple, whether waking up, traveling, or preparing meals. We do occasionally listen to Public Radio in Central PA, but having access to VPR on my cell phone is wonderful!

I love VPR, but this is a terrible app. It's unresponsive, so you don't know whether it's registered a touch and everything takes forever, so you end up tapping again and pausing it because you didn't know it was playing. It does not keep your place in on-demand shows, and I have not figured out how to make it continue playing after my phone turns off, whatever it is, it's not a permission I can find. So it's constantly loses your place, and you have to start over.

I love the ability to hear the news in my home state while listening to the music my grandmother is listening to as well. Just a small issue... The app shuts off randomly at times, even if connection is maintained... A setting to make sure it stays active for extended periods of time?

Does not make it easy to listen while using other apps. Not very "stable", as in sometimes it does not work at all. Edit: getting to know it better, suddenly in love with the on demand feature...

Very inconvenient listing of On Demand programs. If a program begins with the the article A in its title, you must search through every such program beginning with A. Some programs cannot be cast to your TV while others can. Lots of good programs but hardly worth the effort to locate the one you want to watch.
