Why Unfeed Life Uses the Android Accessibility Service

Unfeed Life's app-blocking and focus features rely on Android's Accessibility Service. Here is exactly why, and what it does and doesn't do.

To block a distracting app the moment you open it, Unfeed Life must know which app is in the foreground in real time. Android provides no other public API that reports this reliably across every way an app can be opened. The Accessibility Service is the only mechanism Android offers for this.

What it does:
- Detects the foreground app by listening only to window-state-change events, reading just the package name (e.g. com.instagram.android).
- Checks that package name, entirely on-device, against the block list and schedules you set up yourself.
- If it matches, shows the mindful-pause or block screen you configured. If not, it does nothing.
- If you tap "Go back," it performs the same action as the Home button to return you to your home screen — no interaction with other apps' content.
- Powers the optional focus timer bubble during active sessions.

What it never does:
- Never reads, logs, or transmits screen content, text, or anything you type — window content retrieval is disabled; only the event type and package name are received.
- Never captures keystrokes, passwords, or clipboard data.
- Never used for ads, analytics, or profiling.
- Never sends accessibility data off your device — matching happens locally.
- Never simulates taps or input in other apps, aside from the single Home action described above.

Why not another way: usage-stats APIs report app switches with a delay, letting blocked content appear before Unfeed Life can react. Legacy foreground-detection APIs are restricted on modern Android. Real-time window-state events are the only supported way to intercept a blocked app before it's shown.

Before enabling this in Android Settings, Unfeed Life shows a dedicated consent screen explaining exactly what the service reads, why, and what it never does.
