Unicode Keyboard Android

Unicode Keyboard

Type any character wherever you want, directly from your keyboard.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Unicode Keyboard lets you type any Unicode character directly from your keyboard without app switching or copy-paste. It offers two input modes: entering a hex code point or browsing a catalog of characters, usable in virtually any app.

Note: the extension is free, ad-free, and requires no unnecessary permissions. Fonts are not bundled; whether a character displays depends on the host app's font support. This project is not affiliated with Unicode, Inc.

User Reviews

Users praise Unicode Keyboard for enabling input of many Unicode symbols not present on standard keyboards, especially for those who know the code points. However, usability gaps—such as the lack of search/browse and inconsistent device compatibility—limit practicality for casual users.
Pros
  • Allows input of Unicode symbols not available on standard keyboards (e.g., superscripts, snowman).
  • Simple for users who know the Unicode code points and can insert characters quickly.
  • Offers an extensive set of symbols.
  • Ad-free and easy keyboard switching.
Cons
  • No built-in search or easy browse to locate specific characters; users must memorize or look up code points externally.
  • Requires knowing or remembering code points; not beginner-friendly.
  • Inconsistent compatibility; reports of nonfunctionality on Android 15 and on tablets.
  • Some content data (block/character names) can be missing or outdated in newer versions, causing confusion.

This app is a good start. It needs a "favorite characters" function and dozens of programmable keys. That would make it a very useful addition to Gboard. Looking forward to the next version. (I see that there is a limited beta release, but I don't have the time for testing experimental software.)
