Features & Capabilities

Scid on the go is a powerful Chrome extension that lets chess enthusiasts easily browse and analyze Scid (Shane's Chess Information Database) files, even those containing millions of games. With rich features including header search by player, site, event, date, ECO, and ELO ratings, users can quickly find games or positions of interest.

The extension supports advanced game searches by material and position, favorites for quick access, and clipboard operations for copying or pasting games and positions. Scid on the go offers an interactive board with editing and variation support, plus autoplay to replay games with customizable delays.

For deeper analysis, it includes Stockfish 10 by default and supports additional UCI chess engines. Users can import PGN files from the internet or local storage, enter study mode, and even mark games for deletion (requiring desktop Scid for cleanup). Integration with chess OCR apps and internet PGN downloads from The Week in Chess make this tool a comprehensive solution for playing, studying, and managing chess databases on the go.

Licensed under GNU GPL v2, the extension blends open source contributions to bring a sleek, feature-rich chess experience on Chrome.

User Reviews

The app is widely loved for practice and quick game review, and praised for its lightweight, engine-backed design. However, reliability and data handling are recurring concerns: several users report the app not working, saving/storing PGN data is problematic, and there are UI/visual display issues on certain devices.
Pros
  • Great for practicing chess and quickly reviewing recent games.
  • Lightweight, visually appealing layout, with an engine included and no ads.
  • Overall positive and consistently praised as a top chess app.
Cons
  • Not functioning reliably: multiple reviews report that the app doesn't work or crashes.
  • Cannot save games or locate saved PGN files consistently.
  • UI/visual display issues on some devices: font size problems, unreadable opponent names, and visibility problems with pieces/icons in dark themes.
Recent reviews
useless now: just doesn't work anymore.

I would like the "review mode" to flip the board, and to automatically load the next game just like the "study mode" does. Or an option to show notation in the "study mode" could be helpful. Also in tactics mode it does not take into account other variations. The app has lot of room for improvement to the user's needs.
