great app overall, but the hard 100,000-message outgoing queue limit is a serious problem for self-hosted users. if the server is offline while travelling, the queue eventually fills and OwnTracks starts dropping the oldest location history. there should either be a configurable queue limit, a much higher limit, or an option to retain all queued locations subject to available storage. losing location history silently is not acceptable for an app whose purpose is location logging.

User Reviews
OwnTracks is praised for its privacy-friendly, self-hosted backend and solid OpenHAB/Home Assistant integration, with a clean, capable interface. When the service runs, it’s effective for location tracking and data control. The main drawbacks are persistent reliability problems (background reporting stops), a steep setup requiring Linux-based servers, and recurring connectivity/upload issues, plus occasional GPS accuracy and stability problems after Android updates. Overall, it’s powerful for advanced users but not beginner-friendly or consistently reliable.
Pros
- Privacy-focused, self-hosted backend giving users full control over their data.
- Strong integration with OpenHAB/Home Assistant when configured.
- Excellent interface and generally stable when the service is running.
- Can be quickly set up on a NAS using Grok for backend deployment.
- Viable option for users who want to run their own server and manage data locally.
Cons
- Unreliable background reporting; after a few days it stops sending data and requires force-quitting to recover.
- Requires a Linux-based backend; not plug-and-play and not beginner-friendly; setup is complex.
- Frequent connectivity and upload failures to the backend; cannot establish a connection consistently.
- Inconsistent location accuracy and GPS tracking; some devices show poor accuracy or only GPS pings.
- Stability issues around network changes and Android updates; occasional crashes and ads detract from use.

A decent OSS tracking app. I wish the client app had a bit more parity in features compared to the iOS app, but one has to understand that an app developed by volunteers has limitations.
