Digital parenting: study of experiences, expectations, parents and children.

Features & Capabilities

Gradually in recent years, digital activities have been invited into families to occupy a central place.

Since March 2020, this phenomenon has increased as digital activities have enabled the continuity of professional, educational and social activities. Today all these activities are divided between "remote" and "face-to-face".

For everyone, parent or child, it is not easy to find the right balance.

In addition, the private family circle has become very permeable to "digital intrusions": companies, work colleagues and friends invite each other via our connected devices, not always with our consent and at any time of the day or night.

For parents, digital brings new challenges in terms of education and protection of their children, in a context where technologies and uses are constantly evolving. Also, in families, digital uses are the subject of debates, negotiations and can lead to disagreements between parents and children, even between parents.

Supervising your child's digital practices means facing a complex problem and sometimes having to deal with contradictory feelings. On the one hand, digital activities have many benefits in terms of education, acquisition of knowledge and therefore future prospects for the child. They can also contribute to his well-being by allowing him to socialize with his friends or to be entertained. On the other hand, and especially for the youngest, without adequate supervision, they expose the child to content that could harm his physical or mental health, or even put him in danger.

To protect and educate their child, parents need to have a global vision of the issues specific to their own family because each one is unique.

As for children, especially those aged 6 to 12, they were born with digital. Thus in their relationship to the world, whether with their friends, during recreational or school activities, digital plays a central role. Young people associate digital tools with their social life and well-being. If they are deprived of it, they experience it as an attack on their rights and freedom.

To help families, the Digital Parenting Foundation believes in giving voice to all family members and all types of families. The objective of this research work is to collect needs and expectations, to analyze the experience in detail and to propose relevant solutions.

The DiPaF application is innovative because it collects testimonials from each parent and each child within the same family. It incorporates a large-scale qualitative dimension.

The principle is fun and practical. Each member of the same family receives in their personal space a short questionnaire of 10-15 minutes per day, for ten days. Furthermore, especially for the youngest children, the method of recording responses is very simple, thus encouraging their freedom of expression.

The DiPaF application is ethical. Digital Parenting Foundation is a non-profit organization and the data we collect is processed in accordance with the requirements of the GDPR, and is exclusively dedicated to the purposes of this scientific research.
