Review summary

Cryptomator Android app provides strong security with open-source encryption and a user-preferred one-time purchase model. It works well for small vaults and integrates with cloud services. However, users report significant limitations like poor handling of large vaults, inadequate file metadata display, missing desktop features (multiple vaults, drive mounting), lack of thumbnails or gallery view, and sync/upload challenges. Despite its simplicity and security strengths, the app requires improvements in file management, usability, and feature parity with the desktop version to fully satisfy users.
Pros
  • Strong encryption and security with open-source AES-256 encryption, ensuring user files are safe.
  • One-time purchase model without subscription, appreciated by users compared to alternatives with ongoing fees.
  • Works well in combination with cloud providers like Google Drive and Dropbox for encrypted cloud storage.
  • Simplicity and ease of use when working with small vaults and encrypted file management.
  • Compatibility with desktop versions, allowing file sharing and access across devices.
Cons
  • Poor handling of large vaults with many files — files often don't appear after unlocking on Android, reducing usability for big vaults.
  • Inadequate file metadata handling, such as missing or imprecise date information on files, and dates get lost when exporting or sharing files.
  • Limited features compared to the desktop version, including no support for multiple vaults per cloud provider, no default vault selection, and no drive mount for direct file editing.
  • Lack of essential file management features like photo thumbnails, gallery/grid view, folder upload, and lack of integration with Android's Storage Access Framework (SAF).
  • Issues with syncing and organization such as difficulty with automatic image uploads, inability to keep files offline, and no seamless synchronization or backup mapping features.

Gets the job done kinda. A major problem is that it doesn't show your files when you unlock a vault with a massive number of files. On desktop there is a similar but much more scaled down problem. Here I haven't been able to see files in some of my vaults because I have so many files. So what's the purpose of the app then? Good for small vaults. Not good for big vaults. Not really worth the price. Low value for money unfortunately

The pc version does what I want. I see dates of the files, and when I copy them elsewhere the dates are retained. This is important to me because I keep copies of my tax returns, insurance documents, and various receipts. But this Android app shows the dates as 'last week' or 'seven years ago'. Why not give the date? It is worse when I 'export' or 'share' a file to copy it elsewhere. The date is lost. It becomes now / today. Please allow me to see and retain the dates. Then 5 stars.

This application is clunky and difficult to use. The option to use Outlook doesn't work either. Played with it for a little bit and missed my opportunity for a refund. I do not recommend this as a simple file encryption app.

The automatic image upload is killing me. It's one of the main reasons I got Cryptomator, and it doesn't work right. For years, people have complained that deleting an uploaded image on your computer simply prompts Cryptomator to re-upload it from your phone again, making it completely impossible to organize or clean up your image folder. For the other user, it seems to do fine with encrypting my files on Dropbox. But, dang, the image upload sucks!

Installed but could only create vault but do nothing. It shows select master key but i could not tap on it at all. There's no help file also. I'm basically stuck for a paid app.

Good app but room for improvement...having used the Boxcryptor android app for several years, I do miss being able to do things that would make this app truly 5*: - to pin favourite folders and files for ease of access - to open text files in the editor of my choice (Jota+ in my case) - to have a default vault selected for unlocking - bugs when downloading (exporting) large tiff files with no error information shown Hopefully given this is a paid product it'll improve...

So far, it just works. I am transitioning away from Microsoft Windows and OneDrive due to increasingly grave privacy concerns. I am changing to solely Linux computers now and am using pCloud plus Cryptomator for cloud storage. The combo is about as simple as encrypted cloud storage containers possibly can be. Fairly similar to OneDrive's "Personal Vault" in ease of use. On Android, this app opens my cloud directory seamlessly, and it provides all the expected "sharing" of files from my device.

Need to know how to use the paid app on andriod phone to access vault on MEGA cloud service. With repeated attempts I finally got it to work with Onedrive though but I really need it to work with MEGA. Love that this app is one-time fee & not subscription. Desktop version is awesome; so its very disappointing this andriod app appears to fail with Mega. Hopefully a Mega solution is forthcoming soon as I really want it to work & to give it 5 stars!

I guess I don't get it. Or, this app is entirely useless? I tried it out on my Debian desktop and it does the job - create a vault, add files, files are encrypted and hidden with I close the vault and app. Perfect! None of this works in the mobile app. Desktop doesn't support any of the cloud providers that the mobile app does, and the mobile app seems unfinished. I would have been willing to support, if I could simply encrypt, share between devices via cloud, and hide files.

This is too simple and you don't have drive vault in Android. In Windows, it created a drive for you so if you are using an app, you can open a file through the drive. Of course you can mount it, unlock the encryption file but then that's the only purpose. You edit /view the file through the app. There are lots of encryption software out there that does this simple thing. Missing this big feature that available in Windows. The workaround is the make a copy of the file to local drive but you won't be able to sync the file on cloud.
