User Reviews

Bishop: The SWORD Project for Android is praised for its extensive module support, verse study features, and textual criticism tools, making it a powerful resource for Bible study. However, users report frequent crashes, unintuitive navigation, and problems with module management, especially after updates. Resource re-downloading and trouble accessing certain book types are common issues. Despite its complexities, it remains a favored open-source study tool among more experienced users.

Pros

  • Supports many modules familiar from desktop Sword Project, including Bibles, commentaries, word studies, and devotionals.
  • Offers powerful tools for verse study, textual criticism, and manuscript evidence, with features like side-by-side comparisons and Strong's dictionaries integration.
  • Mostly stable and functional on various Android versions once permissions are properly set.
  • Open source and highly customizable, appealing to advanced users and enthusiasts.
  • Good visual layout that supports deep Bible study and learning.

Cons

  • App frequently crashes or fails to open, especially after downloading certain modules or after updates.
  • Navigation and user interface are confusing and unintuitive for many users, with recent updates making the UI less convenient.
  • Modules sometimes fail to load or show as not installed despite downloading, requiring manual fixes or reinstallation.
  • The app often requests to re-download the same resources at startup, causing delays and frustration.
  • Lack of adequate support for certain module types like 'General Books' and difficulty accessing downloaded material.
Recent reviews

Overall I enjoy using this app. The "search" can maybe be tweaked a little bit to allow search in specific books, or even between old and new testament. When typing a phrase I am looking for, it takes me to unnecessary texts that contain some of the words in my sentence or phrase. But, as I stated... Overall, I love this app.

bishop is no where near the usability or stability of the SWORD project apps on iOS or Linux. Selecting text suddenly goes to selecting all when scrolling, the commentary assistant should be ditched and just allow for selecting the commentary just like selecting a Bible revision. I've always enjoyed the SWORD projects work until bishop.
