Review summary

ConnectBot is praised for its simple, ad-free UI, open-source nature, and privacy; it handles basic SSH tasks with features like SOCKS5 port forwarding, localhost access, and IPv6 support. The most common criticisms are stability and reliability issues, readability problems due to a non-monospace font, unreliable copy/paste and public-key handling, lack of password storage, and limited keyboard customization. Overall, it's a lightweight, privacy-friendly option, but it needs improvements in reliability, key management, and user-configurable controls.
Pros
  • Easy to use with a simple, uncluttered UI.
  • Open source and privacy-friendly (no data collection).
  • SSH features including SOCKS5 port forwarding and localhost support.
  • IPv6 support.
  • No ads and free, offering a straightforward SSH client experience.
Cons
  • Stability issues: frequent disconnects and crashes during sessions.
  • Terminal font is not monospace and cursor alignment is off, hurting readability.
  • Key management and clipboard reliability: copy/paste issues and problems with copying/using public keys.
  • No password storage or credential management options.
  • Lack of configurable special keys and limited keyboard customization.

5 star before the update. Now almost unusable. Input from the keyboard is now very difficult. The UI has taken a step backwards too.

Very useful when I don't have access to a laptop or desktop. It has a number of features built in that are ready to use. Obviously using ssh on a phone is not as fast as a computer but this app makes it as easy and quick as possible. No nonsense in it make it very quick and responsive

Ctrl+num combinations stopped working since a couple of months. These are very important for soft keyboards which typically don't have the F1..F10 keys. Otherwise great app.

Fantastic app. My only issue so far has been that it seems to suggest localhost: for port forwards and use ipv6. OpenSSH uses the simpler ipv4 by default. As port forwards can be seen as 127.0.0.1 and PermitOpen is often 127.0.0.1 then the sshd log message (request was denied) is confusing (no ::1 mentioned). To my surprise using 127.0.0.1:port in the connectbot forward setup solved it.

Very useful and nicely thought through with the zoom and the mini keyboard overlay. Two tiny quibbles: 1 - I'd like enter added to the overlay keyboard, so I could press up to move through shell history and enter to repeat a command without the full keyboard, and 2 - the connection lost overlay obscures some of the text - I just thought to pinch-unzoom to read it, but if it were higher, or the drag-scroll allowed overscroll while dragging, that'd be easier to stumble upon.
