User Reviews

aTalk is a solid, no-frills XMPP client praised for supporting major features like secure messaging and conferencing. Users appreciate its protocol coverage and active development. However, recurring problems include app instability during group chats, message receipt when app is closed, lack of dark mode and customization options, and call audio/video issues. Despite rough edges, it remains a recommended client for users needing comprehensive XMPP functionality on Android.
Pros
  • Good basic XMPP client with clear, function-forward design and minimal fluff
  • Supports key XMPP features including secure text, group chat, voice and video conferencing
  • Free and impressively covers many XMPP protocol extensions
  • Active development with responsive debugging and updates
  • Easy to use with good login and account management for experienced users
Cons
  • Frequent app crashes especially with group chats
  • Issues with receiving messages if app is closed or not running in background
  • Lack of visual customization options such as dark mode and notification sound settings
  • Problems with call audio (beep sounds instead of voice) and video calls in vertical mode
  • Difficulties accepting self-signed certificates and TLS connections on some servers

Great basic client. Does the things! The no-frills setup was great for getting warmed back up to xmpp settings and procedures. People coming from bigger clients may miss some conversation-library style niceties, or theme/visual customization options. Good basic function-forward app if you don't want any fluff, just clear control.
