User Reviews

APRSdroid is a well-regarded app for APRS messaging and tracking, praised for its functionality with various radios and well-implemented map and sorting features. Users appreciate its affordability and reliability when correctly configured. However, many report critical issues on modern Android devices, including app crashes primarily linked to mapping functions, and complications with continuous location tracking due to permission restrictions. Users also desire more unit options and improved audio handling. Overall, the app's utility is offset by its lack of recent updates and struggles with newer Android versions, impacting overall user experience.
Pros
  • Good functionality with various radios, especially using digirig lite and Mobilinkd TNC2 over Bluetooth.
  • Effective for messaging, tracking stations, and receiving object positions over-the-air.
  • Well designed map features and sorting of incoming beacons by distance.
  • Reliable and dependable when properly set up and used.
  • Affordable and reasonably priced compared to alternatives.
Cons
  • The app crashes frequently on newer Android versions (Android 10 and above), especially when using map features.
  • Background GPS location permission issues prevent continuous tracking when the app is not open, limiting usability while driving.
  • Distance units default to kilometers with no option for imperial units (miles), which is inconvenient for some users.
  • Audio sending/receiving issues on certain devices, such as inability to send audio through USB-C and problems decoding AFSK signals.
  • Lack of recent updates and maintenance leading to compatibility problems with new Android versions and Google Maps integration.

This app doesn't work on a Pixel phone using AFSK. The APRS Service will not run unless in Tracking mode and even then it does not decode packets. I've tested with an HT wired connection and using the phone's microphone. It doesn't work even using the TNC test audio tracks. Direwolf decodes fine. Don't pay for this app.

Will not send audio through USBC on S24. If you plug and unplug several times it will occasionally see it as a headphone input and send the audio through it and work fine but then goes back to sending through phone speaker. It's capable of working but needs software to fix i think. Other then that a great app.
