The battlefields of the Second World War in the Netherlands are scattered throughout the country. With a series of Podwalks, we take the listener to locations where major battles were fought. As a user, you take a step back in time more than eighty years.

May 1940
The battle during the May days of 1940 has many faces and leaves deep scars. Sometimes Dutch soldiers surrender without a fight. In other places, they offer fierce resistance. After the bombing of Rotterdam on May 14, the resistance is broken. The Dutch Commander-in-Chief, General Henri Winkelman, decides to lay down arms in the afternoon of May 14. Only in Zeeland, where many French troops are also located, does fighting continue for a few more days. Despite the short duration of the battle, there are many casualties. Almost 2,200 Dutch soldiers lose their lives, as do 2,500 civilians. The story of these May days is told in Dordrecht, Middelburg, Ypenburg, and on the Grebbeberg. The Liberation of the Netherlands
On June 6, 1944, Allied troops landed on the coast of Normandy, better known as D-Day. After four arduous years of occupation, the fight for a free Netherlands could finally begin. In the spring of 1945, Nazi Germany was defeated and the Netherlands liberated. However, this did not always proceed smoothly or without resistance. Much happened during these final two years of the war that is worth telling.

From Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Scheldt to the liberation of the Northeast Netherlands, the NIMH Podwalks take you along these lines of the struggle. The ‘smaller’ stories are just as important: the background of the fragmented liberation and the people involved. The liberation walks are currently under development.
