NewsGuard Firefox

NewsGuard

NewsGuard's red/green rating and labels help users know which news and information websites to trust.

Features & Capabilities

NewsGuard is a Chrome extension designed to help users gauge the reliability of news and information websites. It uses a team of experienced journalists to rate websites based on nine apolitical journalistic criteria, assigning trust scores from 0 to 100.

The extension displays red and green ratings directly next to links on search engines and social media platforms, covering 95% of online news engagement. Alongside the ratings, NewsGuard offers detailed "Nutrition Labels" for sites, giving insights into a site's ownership, financing, content credibility, transparency, and history. This empowers users to make informed decisions and reduce exposure to misinformation and disinformation. NewsGuard is intended for personal use only, ensuring users a trustworthy browsing experience.

User Reviews

Most reviews complain about a paid model and non-functionality: users say it requires a credit card for a free trial and often does nothing until paid. There are frequent allegations of bias and false fact-checking, plus privacy concerns about data collection. A smaller number praise its trust ratings and safety benefits when it works, and some consider the cost worthwhile.
Pros
  • Provides site trust ratings and explains how those decisions are reached.
  • When it works, it is effective at improving browsing safety and reducing the need for manual fact-checking.
  • Some users view it as worth the monthly fee due to its usefulness.
Cons
  • Requires payment or subscription; free trials often require credit card information.
  • Often reported as not functioning or doing nothing until payment; reliability concerns.
  • Perceived bias/impartiality and reports of false fact-checking.
  • Privacy concerns about data collection and potential data breaches.

Newsguard rates and more globally fact-checking can be simplified as: mainstream is good, independant is ungood. Partial, unfiable, even scam. Must me AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.

A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

NewsGuard requires some sensitive permissions that could impact your browser and data security. Exercise caution before installing.
