TV Calibration Android

TV Calibration

By: VMApps
Offers patterns and tests to quickly adjust a screen and home theater

Features & Capabilities

TV Calibration is a handy Chrome extension designed to help users quickly adjust and verify their television and home theater settings. It displays various test patterns that assist in setting optimal brightness, contrast, color accuracy, and overscan on TVs. While it doesn't modify settings directly, it provides visual guides so you can manually optimize your display.

Ideal for Android TV devices and Android-based TV boxes, this extension also includes tools to test home cinema audio setups, specifically 5.1 speaker assignments and wiring phases, requiring Dolby Digital AC3 compatibility. Note that it is not suited for professional calibration, nor for HDR signals. Inspired by Paul Lutus' HDTV Test Pattern tool, TV Calibration is a personal project aimed at simplifying your screen and audio calibration experience.

User Reviews

Overall, the app is praised for being easy to use and for offering useful test patterns that help tune a TV’s picture without expensive gear. It appears to work well on many devices (Nvidia Shield, Samsung, Sony, Hisense) for basic calibration tasks. Common drawbacks include inconsistent compatibility across models (some TVs don’t respond or aren’t detected), sliders that don’t affect the picture on certain sets, and a lack of in-app guidance. Some users also feel it’s not suitable for their color-meter or projector needs.
Pros
  • Easy to use with a simple workflow for calibration.
  • Provides visuals and test patterns for manual color/brightness calibration.
  • Works on a wide range of devices/TVs (Nvidia Shield, Samsung, Sony Android TV, Hisense, etc.).
  • Helps improve picture quality without requiring expensive equipment.
Cons
  • Inconsistent compatibility across models; not all TVs respond to the app's adjustments.
  • On some TVs, sliders change nothing visible on the screen.
  • Lack of clear in-app guidance or instructions; help/assistance is limited.
  • Some users feel the app is useless/pointless for their specific setup (e.g., color meter or projector use).
  • Device detection/recognition of Android TV can be flaky (reports of ā€œno Android TV presentā€).
