Elvish & Dwarvish Android

Elvish & Dwarvish

Write in Elfish / Dwarfish scripts: elven alphabet transcription

Features & Capabilities

Elvish & Dwarvish is a Chrome extension that enables users to transliterate Latin text into authentic Middle-earth alphabets from Tolkien's lore. It supports the Cirth script (Angerthas Erebor) used for Dwarvish languages like Khuzdul, as well as the Tengwar script for Elvish Quenya. The tool is designed to provide a mostly language-neutral correspondence between Latin letters and Tengwar letters, making it versatile for fans and scholars alike.

Future updates promise expanded support including Sindarin and Westron scripts, enhancing the transliteration experience. Note that this extension provides transliteration, converting letters between alphabets, rather than translation of languages. Ideal for enthusiasts creating content or exploring Tolkien's world, Elvish & Dwarvish brings Middle-earth script writing to your browser.

User Reviews

Users appreciate the app for its educational value, beautiful design, and support for Tolkien languages. It is particularly praised for being fun and user-friendly. However, many users report issues with the premium keyboard crashing frequently and incomplete character sets. There are script inaccuracies in Tengwar mode and some complaints about ads and paywalls. Overall, it is a good tool for Tolkien fans and linguists but could benefit from bug fixes, better guides, and improved keyboard functionality.
Pros
  • The app offers a fun and informative way to read and write Tolkien languages like Elvish and Dwarvish.
  • The interface is user-friendly and the layout is beautifully designed with well-laid-out settings.
  • It supports different scripts including Elven script, Dwarven runes, Black Tongue of Mordor, and Sindarin.
  • It is useful for fans, linguaphiles, and even D&D players to add authenticity to their games.
  • The app is affordable with a one-time payment unlocking more features and languages.
Cons
  • The keyboard feature, especially in the premium version, has multiple crashes and stability issues on some devices.
  • Translations sometimes have inaccuracies, especially regarding vowel placement and Tengwar script specifics, like accents and forms of 'r'.
  • Ads are considered excessive in the free version by some users.
  • Some important features are locked behind a paywall and the premium keyboard may not include the full alphabet.
  • Lack of instructions or help guides makes the app confusing for some users, especially those unfamiliar with the script.

Accents are not in the correct position. Besides ok app. Ads are too much though

Good app, but there are some bugs I'd like to see fixed. For instance, a Tolkien nerd will know there's two versions of 'r', one for the middle of words and one for endings, and in the app, it automatically renders which form of 'r' is output based on whether you type something after it or not. This is ok, and accurate for the most part, but when you type a long vowel carrier after 'r' in the middle of a word, the app appears to understand that as ending that word. It then gives the ending form.
