Columbus was born as numerous Native American settlements on the banks of the Scioto River, today it is the capital and most populous city of the US state of Ohio as well as being the capital of Franklin County.
The metropolitan area is home to the Battelle Memorial Institute, the largest private research and development foundation in the world; Chemical Abstracts Service, the largest chemical information collection center in the world; and Ohio State University, one of the largest universities in the United States.
