Navigation Log Firefox

Navigation Log

This add-on logs all navigation actions to an SQLite database. The source URL is logged together with the destination URL and title every time you click a link or type in the address bar. So, it is possible to recreate your whole browsing history.

Features & Capabilities

Oftentimes, we try to remember how we ended up on a website. Unfortunately, the browser history is not enough to get this information.

This add-on for Firefox logs all navigation actions to an SQLite database. The source URL is logged together with the destination URL and title every time you click a link or type in the address bar.

So, it is possible to recreate your whole browsing history.

In order to use it, please:

  1. install the add-on from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/navigation-log/, then
  2. download the external tool that manages the Sqlite database from here: https://github.com/prekageo/navigation-log, and
  3. execute python <a href="https://prod.outgoing.prod.webservices.mozgcp.net/v1/29a06c5cfca6b067647c2f69213fbc7a91dd115e8cf7caf4415d83dd7e7d5430/http%3A//navigation_log.py" rel="nofollow">navigation_log.py</a> --install.

This extension could be useful, but I think it needs some improvement: There are no instructions or screenshots for the database management application. The path to the database is also undocumented, and does not appear to be user-configurable. (What if you want to store the log on a network file server?) It would be nice to have a log player extension in the browser instead of a separate Python application, since many platforms do not have a Python interpreter installed by default. That would enable live browser mirroring for tech support and classroom applications without the need for a VNC server (which consumes more bandwidth on the host PC's data link). It appears that Mozilla is working on a similar project and I mention it here so that duplication of effort towards the same goal can be avoided: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/WebReplay https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/WebReplayRoadmap

Is Navigation Log Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Navigation Log requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.
