Mute sites by default

By: abba23
Mutes all sites by default and remembers unmuted sites

Features & Capabilities

Mute Sites by Default is a Chrome extension designed to protect you from unexpected and annoying audio by muting all websites automatically unless you explicitly whitelist them. It remembers your preferred unmuted sites, ensuring a hassle-free browsing experience without unwanted sound interruptions.

You can control site audio effortlessly by clicking the speaker icon on a tab, right-clicking to mute or unmute, or using the convenient Ctrl+M keyboard shortcut. The extension supports wildcard characters in the whitelist, allowing broad control over subdomains and top-level domains, such as *.reddit.com or www.google.*. Customize your audio preferences further on the extension's preferences page, with options to disable automatic whitelist updates for more temporary muting needs.

User Reviews

Users appreciate 'Mute sites by default' for effectively silencing unwanted audio and improving browsing comfort with simple, domain-based muting. However, many find the muted speaker icon in tabs visually cluttering by replacing site favicons, suggest improvements to toggle mute states more easily, and note occasional audio delays on streaming sites. Requests for blacklist functionality and better stability were also mentioned. Overall, it's a valuable tool but could use refinement in UI and reliability.
Pros
  • Effectively mutes websites by default, preventing unwanted audio playback.
  • Simple to use and improves browsing experience significantly.
  • Option to remember unmuted sites to avoid repeated unmuting.
  • Addresses the common annoyance of sites forcing audio unexpectedly.
  • Supports muting by domain rather than just individual tabs, useful for Chrome users missing this feature.
Cons
  • The muted icon replaces or hides the site favicon on tabs, which some users find cluttered or visually noisy.
  • Audio synchronization issues and delays reported on some video streaming sites when the addon is active.
  • Accidental unmuting happens easily when switching tabs, and remuting requires extra steps (like using right-click menu).
  • No built-in blacklist option to mute only specific sites by default.
  • Some reports of instability or crashes with Firefox when using the addon.

This plugin is awesome, and if you're about to give it a bad review, I don't think you are smart enough to figure out how to actually use it. This is an essential plugin and should be integrated into Firefox itself/browsers themselves.

Good extension. To remove only the "muted" icon from newer firefox version (138 and up), I add to the userChrome.css: .tabbrowser-tab[muted] .tab-icon-overlay, .tabbrowser-tab[muted] .tab-audio-button { display: none !important; }
