Multi-touch Zoom Firefox

Multi-touch Zoom

Not needed in latest FF Adds missing feature of Firefox: Smooth zooming with the pinch gesture on a trackpad Non-multi-touch users can still smooth zoom by scrolling and holding down the SHIFT key Thanks to Marek Polakovic for the gesture icon

Features & Capabilities

The Multi-touch Zoom extension for Firefox restores the seamless smooth zooming experience found in browsers like Chrome and Safari. It enables pinch gesture zooming on trackpads, allowing users to intuitively zoom in and out with fluidity. For users without multi-touch devices, smooth zooming is also accessible by scrolling while holding the SHIFT key. This extension requires Firefox version 55 or later and includes handy zoom reset shortcuts (⌘+0 on macOS, CTRL+0 on Windows). Although newer Firefox versions have started introducing native smooth zoom support via the apz.allow_zooming setting, this extension remains an excellent enhancement for smoother browsing. The project is actively maintained on GitHub where users can provide feedback and report issues, including recent Windows touchscreen support developments. Optimize your Firefox browsing with natural and responsive zoom controls using Multi-touch Zoom.

User Reviews

Multi-touch Zoom is appreciated for providing pinch-to-zoom functionality in Firefox before native support existed, allowing users to zoom the interface without scaling content. Users commend its simplicity and developer effort. However, it currently suffers from compatibility issues with recent Firefox versions, often failing to work. Additionally, it can cause problems like YouTube full-screen playback disruptions after touch events. Some users highlight that the extension's zoom gestures don't fully replicate expected pinch behaviors. Overall, while conceptually valuable, the extension requires fixes or alternatives to address its limitations.
Pros
  • Provides a useful pinch-to-zoom functionality not available natively in earlier Firefox versions.
  • Helps zoom the browser interface without changing content size.
  • Compact and efficient, serving exactly its intended purpose.
  • Acknowledged effort and development seen on GitHub.
  • Serves as a temporary solution before Firefox introduced native smooth zoom support.
Cons
  • The extension does not work properly in recent Firefox versions (e.g., Firefox 118.0.2).
  • Causes issues such as breaking YouTube full-screen playback after touchscreen interaction.
  • Limited effectiveness compared to pinch gestures in other browsers, sometimes duplicating existing zoom functionalities.
  • Requires manual workarounds and configuration tweaks to function correctly.

Three and not one star ONLY because I don't want to kill this extension rating (given all the effort put into this project, as seen on the github). However, this extension doesn't work currently (firefox v118.0.2) and apparently hasn't for a long time already. It's a shame, we were this close to having such an important tool. Hope the project will be forked and fixed one day !
