RootDim [root] Android

RootDim [root]

Dim many rooted device's screens below factory settings.

Features & Capabilities

RootDim [root], formerly SuperDim, is a Chrome extension designed for rooted Android devices that allows you to dim LCD and some OLED screens beyond the factory minimum brightness. This is especially useful for serious amateur astronomers or users needing ultra-low screen brightness to preserve night vision. RootDim also offers LED control on certain devices, enabling you to turn off power LEDs for complete darkness.

The extension supports up to five customizable profiles, allowing quick toggling between different brightness and night mode settings. You can create launcher shortcuts for easy access and even integrate with ChainFire3D for enhanced night mode management. Though largely succeeded by ScreenDim, which doesn't require root, RootDim remains a powerful tool for devices where deep dimming is essential. For issues, direct communication with the developer is encouraged before rating.

Note: Some devices have firmware limitations that may prevent dimming below OS-set limits. Special fixes exist for specific models like Archos 70/101.

User Reviews

RootDim can dim brightness beyond software limits using hardware-level dimming, helping reading comfort and battery life, and works on several devices/versions when it functions. However, it suffers from maintenance and compatibility issues, with many users reporting bugs, instability, and device-specific failures. Some devices can’t dim past the system minimum, and there are complaints about the app changing system brightness and confusing root permissions. Overall, it’s useful where stable, but reliability varies widely by device.
Pros
  • Dims the backlight to hardware minimums, not just a black overlay.
  • Allows brightness to go nearly to 0, aiding reading comfort and battery life.
  • Works on multiple devices/Android versions (e.g., Pie; rooted devices like Moto G5).
  • Overall effectiveness when it functions, with several users noting it works well.
Cons
  • Not maintained and appears broken on many devices due to lack of updates.
  • Device incompatibilities are common; some devices cannot dim below the system minimum or don’t work at all.
  • Bugs and instability reported (random enables/disables, widgets causing blank screens, crashes).
  • Root permission is often questioned or seen as unnecessary/overreaching, causing confusion.
  • App can override or alter system brightness settings and may not always restore them correctly, leading to unsafe or unexpected behavior.
