User Reviews

Users consistently highlight aTox as privacy-first and simple, with encryption and no need to share personal data, plus good LAN/local-network operation and cross-platform support. The strongest positive is its focus on peer-to-peer messaging without a central server. The most frequent downsides are missing video calling and a desire for more features (voice messages, replies/forward, find). Some reviewers also report minor reliability/UI issues (QR scanning sometimes failing, font-size tweaks, messages getting stuck or unknown contacts). Overall, it’s a solid privacy base that would benefit from feature expansion and polish.
Pros
  • Privacy-first messaging with encryption and no personal data required.
  • Simple, lightweight and easy to use.
  • Operates on local networks (LAN) and can function without internet, with LAN discovery.
  • Cross-platform support (Windows, Linux) and ongoing single-developer maintenance.
Cons
  • No video calling / video support; a major feature requested by multiple reviews.
  • Missing/limited features like voice messages, reply/forward, and find/search; overall feature depth is limited.
  • Some reliability and UI issues noted, such as QR code scanning sometimes failing, font-size/UI tweaks needed, and messages sometimes stuck or contacts show as unknown.

Seems to have kiddie-proofing features.

I herd somebody talk about it being p2p and not encrypted. Though running Tor via phone would work? I will say it's simple and works well especially for a single developer. I think you should implement a Tor proxie built into messaging so it's actually safe... Am I Wrong??
