low—web Firefox

low—web

Reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint of your internet browsing. Blocks useless content and optimizes what can be done.

Features & Capabilities

The low—web Chrome extension is designed to minimize energy consumption and carbon emissions caused by internet browsing. By blocking unnecessary content such as share buttons, avatars, and fonts, and by optimizing media delivery—lowering video quality, disabling autoplay, and delaying image loading—it reduces the environmental impact of each page visit. The extension also sets a 'save-data:on' header to signal websites to limit data usage.

Since internet activity accounts for nearly 8% of global electricity use and emits 3 to 4% of greenhouse gases, low—web targets these impacts by cutting down on resource-heavy content and optimizing browsing behavior. While it helps reduce data consumption and energy use during surfing, it also encourages users to extend device lifecycles by repairing or keeping devices longer to maximize environmental benefits.
