Features & Capabilities

Link Hints is a powerful Chrome extension designed for users who prefer navigating the web with their keyboard. It introduces customizable keyboard shortcuts that enable you to click links, buttons, and other clickable elements without using a mouse or touchpad.

By pressing Alt+J (or Ctrl+J on macOS), small yellow hint boxes appear next to links or clickable areas, allowing you to type corresponding letters to activate clicks. Additional shortcuts enable opening links in new tabs, switching tabs, selecting multiple elements, and more. This extension enhances accessibility and speeds up browsing for users who love keyboard shortcuts or have difficulties with traditional pointing devices.

User Reviews

Users appreciate Link Hints for its simplicity, stability, and ability to speed up web navigation without interfering with Firefox's default shortcuts. It's praised for improving productivity and being less complicated than alternatives. However, common drawbacks include the absence of single key hint activation and no automatic enabling on page load, as well as having fewer features than some other similar addons.
Pros
  • Simple and easy to use, providing faster keyboard-based web navigation.
  • Stable and reliable compared to similar addons that may be complicated or dying in support.
  • Improves productivity, especially for tasks with multiple inputs, like eBay forms.
  • Does not compromise default Firefox keyboard shortcuts, maintaining familiarity.
  • Has features beyond just clicking links, such as opening links in background tabs and multiple links.
Cons
  • Lacks single key activation for hints, limiting ease of use.
  • Does not auto-enable on page load, requiring manual activation each time.
  • Fewer functions compared to other more complex extensions, which some users see as a limitation.

This is such a wonderful way to browse the web. I still use the mouse most of the time, but for some things I have started to find it much easier to use the keyboard instead. Especially cookie warnings, that require me to move the mouse way over to the other side of the screen, are easier to just dismiss with two keystrokes.

Nice alternative if you only use a few features from the Tridactyl extension and find it too bloated. Also see the "hjkl" extension
