Features & Capabilities

After you have added Lenz to Firefox, just visit any web page and click the Lenz button on your browser toolbar. Choose a lens shape and the lens will follow your mouse movements.

FAQ:

Q: Why does the Lenz add-on ask if it can "Access your data for all websites"? A: In order to make the lens effect, the add-on takes a screenshot of the current webpage and modifies the area the lens is over. Taking the screenshot triggers that warning from the Firefox system. I do not store or transmit any data at all from your web browser.

Q: How do I turn it off? A: To turn off the magnification effect, click the same icon that is currently active (either the hemisphere or the semicylinder).

Q: Why does the lens disappear when it goes over certain parts of the web page? A: Lenz cannot receive mouse movement notifications when the mouse is over an embedded "iframe" tag in the web page. These tags are sometimes used for advertisements or embedded videos. Since the lens would just seem to be stuck, I decided to just hide it until the mouse moves back to the main part of the page.

Q: What determines the location where the lens displays when its controls are being changed? A: It goes to the last place you clicked.

User Reviews

This extension could have been perfect if it weren't for two problems: (1) A major bug: this extension doesn't work correctly for zoomed pages: it's not the point you hover on that's the focus of the lens. One implication is that the lens can't show you the bottom and right sides of a zoomed page (this is unfortunate for sites like YouTube, which have a sidebar on the right). (2) Turning the lens on/off should be easier (i.e., one mouse click or key press). (So I currently use a different extension, "Magnifying Glass", but it's a pity because I really realy like the optics effect of the Lenz extension (because it makes it easier to see where you are relative to the content outside the lens).)

Is Lenz Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Lenz requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.

Risk impact analysis details
  • Critical Allows access to all websites, posing a significant security risk as it can monitor and modify data from any visited site.
Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Add-ons Store, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

Lenz may not be trust-worthy. Avoid installing if possible unless you really trust this publisher.
