UPDATE:

This addon is now a part of Enhance-O-Tron for Plex! Get it here:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/enhance-o-tron-for-plex/fhbelblobiabomlogejpabonapkencph

Do you have widescreen films encoded in their original cinema (21:9 / 2.35:1) aspect ratio that don't zoom full screen in Plex? Now you can just click the 21:9 button in the bottom toolbar to view your ultrawide films in their full glory!

Details:

Most feature films are shot in the ultrawide (21:9 / 2.35:1) format but since most televisions are 16:9, HD Blu Rays are encoded in 16:9 with black bars on the top and bottom. This allows the film to retain the original aspect ratio when filling a regular screen. But if you have an ultrawide screen, the black bars are not necessary and prevent the film from filling all the available space on your screen. Many digital players have a setting to zoom to 21:9 to crop the black bars out, but this was missing in Plex.

Note that when film is distributed digitally sometimes the black bars are removed in the re-encoding. In these cases the film will fill the screen properly. This extension is only needed in those cases where your source content is encoded in the original Blu Ray spec of 16:9 with the black bars. So if you see black bars when Plex is in full screen, just hit the 21:9 button and get the popcorn...

User reviews

This extension is the only way for now to watch content in the right aspect ratio using the plex web interface. With the only alternative being Plex Media Player on the way out, this has come in very handy. Does what is says, can recommend it!
