Extension summary

Grumpy filters out the titles in Game Grumps videos on YouTube to just the important bits.

I'm a Game Grumps fan, truly I am. But I'm not a fan of the new clickbaity titles. I recognize that clickbait is a necessary evil in ${currentYear}. However clickbait creates a weird disconnect for long-time viewers. The most attractive title to a new viewer is one that doesn't include "<Game Title> Part <number>", but to a subscriber that's the two pieces of information I want.

So here's my attempt at a compromise: a chrome extension that locally filters the title to just the important part. That way the clickbait can still bring in new subscribers, but the title you see on your subscription feed is just the part you care about.

The way the filter works is it searches the title for the last space-hyphen-space (aka " - ") and replaces the title with only what comes before and after that last hyphen. In most cases this ends up with "Game Name - Part N" which is exactly what you want. Sometimes the title format is different, and the extension tries to adapt. For instance, the older episode format always ended with " - Game Grumps" or " - Guest Grumps", titles like these are ignored because they don't need to be adjusted. If the original title does not include the title of the game, or the format goes somewhere unexpected (like the rare case where the title of the game comes first), the extension will do the wrong thing. So far this has only been a sporadic occurrence, but if there is a major format change I'll try to keep the extension up to date.

I originally made this extension for myself but I figured I'd share it with you!

This is an absolute blessing. I feel like I can finally watch GG without feeling like an idiot falling for clickbait just because I'm a loyal viewer
