🛡 KOZANE — THE SCALES
Kozane are the small lacquered scales a suit of armour is built from. Hundreds of them, each one pierced and laced to its neighbours with silk cord, until the rows become a single plate. This dial is one round fitting of that armour: black-urushi scales, cross-laced silk, three gilt bosses on karakusa rosettes, and a band of plain black leather across the middle.

⌚ THE LEATHER BAND
That band of hide is where the time goes. It is the one part of the plate an armourer left undecorated, so the hour sits on ground that was never carved. Month and day on the left, the hour at the centre, weekday and seconds on the right.

🎀 FIVE LACING SILKS
Choose the cord the plate is laced with: Hi (scarlet), Kon (indigo), Moegi (spring green), Murasaki (purple) or Shiro (white) — the colours an armourer actually worked in. Only the silk changes. The gilt bosses, the brocade fittings and the lacquer scales are the same in every one.

🪡 THREE INLAYS
The numerals can be cut in Kin (gold), Gin (silver) or Shu (vermilion). One choice drives the hour, the date and the complications together, the way one craftsman would have cut them all.
