Formant shifting runs upstream of Android's standard pitch-shift and time-stretch processing, chained directly into the audio pipeline.

Formant shifting is typically applied downstream as a final detail pass on voice character. Moving it upstream instead is what makes real-time formant shifting possible here—and it locks in the perceived voice character early in the chain reducing processing load too.
