Get rid of that nasty horizontal scrolling, with inline images fitting Gmail's message area.
Gmail Inline Image Fit - Fix Horizontal Scrolling Issues
"Gmail Inline Image Fit" is a Chrome extension that eliminates the inconvenience of horizontal scrolling caused by oversized inline images in Gmail messages. Ideal for those images such as screenshots or elaborate signatures which may not fit in a windowed view, the tool ensures all inline images fit within the message body. The extension still leaves intact Gmail's lightbox feature for viewing images in full size.

This is brilliant for extremely large embedded images.
Downside is that all sent emojis and signature emojis look HUGE. Please update the extension to do away with this strange side effect.

This extension does what it says. It takes oversized inline images in Gmail and reduces them to a max width of 100% of the parent element's size. In other words, it fits the image on the screen so that you don't have to scroll horizontally to view the image and find the reply button.
As other reviewers have noted, one significant downside is that this extension makes emojis annoyingly large. Can't you just make the max-width: 100% without changing the size of smaller images? If you could fix that I would give the extension five stars.

This extension enlarges emojis quite a bit, which is why I give it 3 stars.
