Features & Capabilities

A Medical ID is a useful reference when visiting a healthcare professional and could be life-saving in an emergency.

Create Medical IDs for yourself and, if required, other family members and dependents. Enter Personal Data, Medical Conditions, Allergies & Reactions, Medications, and Emergency Contacts. Use Other Notes for any other kind of information you want to record, such as insurance details, immunisations, family medical history etc. Attach photos from the camera or photo library. Attach photos or PDFs by importing them from iCloud Drive, Dropbox etc. or dragging and dropping them from other apps. Scan documents to create PDF attachments. Markup photo and PDF attachments to annotate, highlight or redact information.

Highly-customisable widgets are also available to show information from your Medical ID. Your iPhone/iPad can be configured to allow Today View widgets to be accessible from the lock screen without unlocking your device.

Lock Screen widgets are available on iOS 16. There are rectangular widgets for viewing an Emergency Contact or up to three Personal Details items. There are also circular and rectangular widgets which just open the app (this requires unlocking the device).

A Watch app gives access to your Medical ID without having to unlock your phone.

Back up your Medical IDs to iCloud Drive, Dropbox etc. for safekeeping or to copy them between devices.

Note: for space and usability reasons, photos and PDFs are not included in the Watch App or Widgets.

User Reviews

Users praise Medical ID Records for centralizing medical data for family and pets, easy-to-use entry, and strong emergency-readiness features like medical IDs and quick sharing with clinicians. The app supports photos and PDFs and is valued for saving time in ERs and by doctors. However, recurring concerns include the tool's limited data fields and organization options, making it hard to store all relevant details (doctors, surgeries, tests, dosages). Users also report editing friction, incomplete syncing across devices, and occasional widget issues. Overall, it is a practical tool with notable gaps to address.
Pros
  • Centralized storage of family (and pet) medical information, including meds, surgeries, diagnoses, labs, doctors, and photos/documents.
  • Easy to use interface for entering and viewing data, with support for notes and photos and the ability to reorder items.
  • Strong emergency readiness features, such as medical ID access and quick sharing with doctors/EMTs in the ER.
  • Media attachments supported (photos of Rx bottles, insurance cards, PDFs, scans) for a complete record.
  • A trusted tool that clinicians and family members rely on over years, aiding care coordination and peace of mind.
Cons
  • Lacks many essential data fields and sections (e.g., doctors, dates, surgeries, tests, immunizations, med dosage/frequency, emergency contacts).
  • Limited organization options; no folders; users want doctor-specific folders and easier data categorization.
  • Editing experience is not very intuitive and auto-save is missing.
  • Cross-device syncing is unreliable and widgets can be problematic (for example, a widget update).
  • Missing dedicated sections for insurance and other medical information; reporting surgeries and tests is limited.
Recent reviews
Use this for my family including husband, myself and pets. Wonderful having all our info in one place [meds (including dc’ed meds;area for notes), surgeries, diagnoses (images of studies), lists of Drs, last set of labs]. Going to vet is easy bc I have name of their dog food, drs, dates of surgeries, supplements with photos of bottles w ingredient list. If you care for elderly parents or disabled person would definitely use for above and to keep their POA, guardian paperwork and other important documents in one place. You back it up to the cloud as well. Love this app

I was expecting an app a bit robust than this one…doctor data, surgical procedures, etc.

Loads of functions. Auto save would be helpful.
