Tesla - Metal detector and Magnetic field recorder

Utilities

Features & Capabilities

Tesla: Metal Detector & Magnetic Field Recorder is a free tool to detect, measure, and record magnetic fields and metallic objects. It uses your device's magnetometer to provide real-time measurements, a three-axis diagram, and automated long-term recording, with measurements shown in microtesla (µT) and exportable as CSV for analysis.

If your device lacks a magnetometer, you can enable Simulated Mode to see the detector in action. The app features a clean, responsive UI for mobile and tablet use, optional sound feedback, and upgrade options for additional features.

User Reviews

Users praise the app for its simplicity, clear science-like UI, recording capability, and the ability to distinguish ferrous vs non-ferrous metals, with occasional use in teaching EMF concepts. However, many reviews flag reliability issues: readings can be inconsistent or appear random, calibration may be unstable, and some tests show no response near devices. Other recurring concerns include lack of explanations, a confusing Demo/Real mode, and occasional UI bugs. Overall, strong concept but uneven accuracy and polish.
Pros
  • Simple to use and intuitive
  • Scientific-looking interface and generally performs well
  • Recording feature adds value
  • Can distinguish ferrous vs non-ferrous metals (and types 304 vs 316 stainless steel)
  • Useful for teaching and demonstrations of EMF and magnetism
Cons
  • Readings often seem inconsistent or random/unreliable
  • Calibration can be unstable, causing readings to bounce and not settle
  • No consistent response near devices or magnets (false negatives)
  • Lacks explanations and educational context; confusing Demo/Real mode
  • Occasional UI bugs (e.g., settings/close button unresponsive)

I use the app to locate the wifi antennas on my devices (cell phones, iPad, computer etc). Then I can avoid putting that area near my body. I find it by scanning with my phone around a device and when the needle goes to red that’s the antenna giving out and picking up it’s dangerous level of wifi. I especially want children to see how certain areas of a device are important to keep at a distance. I also use interventions to reduce the level of dangerous emf such as pendants with coiled copy(counterclockwise) and high-quality obsidian, in addition to crystal in a resin. Yes they truly work if you have one correctly made. I have tested it by putting the pendant next to the antenna and the needle drops to low yellow or green. I also check for cell towers nearby.

Great app. But no explanations. Maybe it could signal a coming seismic event? Thanks can you have an expanded meter scale above present limit?
