Features & Capabilities

Open GPX Tracker creates GPS traces with waypoints and supports offline maps. It keeps all data on your device—no ads, no data collection, and no in‑app purchases. Key features include Apple Watch support, multiple map sources (Apple Maps, Open Street Map, CartoDB, OpenTopoMaps, OpenSeaMaps), offline map browsing, and automatic recovery after crashes.

It’s ideal for travel, hiking, biking, camera GPS workflows, and Open Street Map work: create routes and waypoints, edit and name them, drag pins, and share GPX files or publish traces. All data remains private to you, with privacy details in the policy. Note: continued GPS use in background can dramatically decrease battery life.

User Reviews

Open GPX Tracker is free, easy-to-use, and lightweight with solid offline logging and a capable Apple Watch app. However, reliability issues around saving/exporting, crashes on opening files, and post-update compatibility woes are frequently reported. Users also want offline map caching and enhanced map features. Overall it’s a strong, open-source tool when it works, but reliability concerns can disrupt critical trips.
Pros
  • Free and ad-free with no in-app purchases.
  • Clean, simple UI that’s easy to use and lightweight on battery.
  • Reliable GPS logging with background recording and strong Apple Watch support; easy transfer of GPX between watch and iPhone.
  • Good export/share capabilities and cross-app compatibility (exporting to a computer; open-source).
  • Effective offline operation: works without internet and stores tracks locally.
Cons
  • Saving GPX can fail or not save, causing data loss and requiring workarounds.
  • Crashes or instability when opening GPX files or after periods of inactivity; reinstall often needed.
  • Compatibility issues after updates that can render old files inaccessible or lost.
  • Missing offline map features and offline map caching (lack of cached maps, map details, etc.).
  • GPS glitches sometimes produce extra or corrupted track entries and editing of errors is limited.

I appreciate this well-designed, completely free GPX tracker, and it has worked perfectly for my needs. However, I have recently encountered a bug where the GPX file sometimes doesn’t save (I have set the app to save to an iCloud folder) and I have lost several tracks thanks to that. Luckily I don’t do anything super import with the app, otherwise this bug would be more than just a minor inconvenience. Other than that, this app is, in my opinion, the best GPS logging app out there.

The application was very useful, both for opening GPX files and for making them. I especially liked the ability to swap between two different file tiles. It even did background GPX recording, which is useful for tracking hikes or for backtracking when travelling. I really wish the developer of this app would update it. It would also be nice if it were to support Apple offline (cached) maps. A recent patch was released for iOS 26, and I appreciate the developers and contributors for maintaining the application.
