Features & Capabilities

Northern Lights Photo Taker is a simple, single-purpose extension that helps you take better aurora borealis photos. When you’re out under the night sky with just an iPhone or iPad, it automates the key camera settings—focus to infinity, ISO, shutter speed, long exposure, and color temperature—so you can simply point and shoot.

It offers three brightness-based presets plus a custom mode for precise control. Find the lights, pick a preset, or switch to custom mode and snap as many photos as you like to share with friends.

User Reviews

Overall, the reviews indicate inconsistent performance. Some users on older devices can capture usable aurora photos, occasionally preserving memories. The majority report compatibility issues on newer iPhones and iOS versions, frequent black or over-dark images, long exposure feature problems, and poor usability with unclear settings. Many say the native iPhone camera outperforms this app, and several call it a waste of money. A small minority report positive results when conditions are favorable or with older hardware.
Pros
  • Can yield usable aurora photos on older iPhone models (e.g., iPhone 6/SE) with a tripod or simple setup.
  • Has produced memorable aurora shots in some cases, helping to preserve images when other methods fall short.
  • Some reviewers report getting usable photos they expected under favorable conditions.
Cons
  • Widespread compatibility problems with newer iPhones and iOS versions; often stops working on iPhone 11/13/14/15 and after updates.
  • Frequent black or severely underexposed images; long exposure feature is disabled or unusable in practice.
  • Poor usability: confusing or malfunctioning sliders, yellow text, unclear settings, and lack of instructional guidance.
  • Often outperformed by the native iPhone camera; many users say results are better without the app.
  • Viewed as a waste of money by multiple reviewers and numerous reports of it not working at all.
Recent reviews
Maybe worked with older phones. Doesn’t work at all on I-Phone 14 or 15.

I only have an iPhone SE. Not a great camera. With this app I get decent northern lights pictures. A little fuzzy. But I don’t have a tripod. I’m very happy.
